What is Christian faith? What do the scriptures say about faith? There are many references to faith in the bible. Some 229 times the word faith appears in scripture, especially in the New Testament and often in the spoken word of Jesus as He interacted with many He healed and as He was teaching His disciples the meaning of faith, a faith that can move mountains.
In speaking to His disciples, Jesus chided them as reported in Matthew 8:30:
Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is and tomorrow is thrown into the oven will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
So, faith is clearly a vital part of a Christian’s life and a clear understanding of the real meaning of faith is critical to everyone who seeks to follow Christ with a real commitment. Perhaps some additional scriptures from the New Testament can help us to not only understand faith but make it real in our lives.
In his letters to the new churches, Paul often includes special scriptures that help us to understand th meaning of faith. Cited below are a few of the references to faith as written by Paul in letters to the fledglings in the new churches as they struggled to become Christians in spite of the persecutions they endured.
Romans 3: 23-25 For we have all sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed.
Romans 5:1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 2:5 That your faith should not be in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
1 Corinthians 16:13 Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong.
Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through, and not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.
There are many more scriptures that help us understand the meaning of Faith. Perhaps a verse from Paul’s letter to the Philippians serves as a benediction to this short blog about faith and its meaning to Christians.
Philippians 1:27 Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or are absent, I may hear of your affairs, that you stand fast in one spirit with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel
