REPENTANCE
We write this at a time when America is struggling to find a way for its people to come together after a bitter election. We are split, with half of the people believing in the Constitution and reverence for God as handed down to us by our forefathers, while the other half feels the need to throw out all the things related to the past and the history of this great nation, thus to start all over again in a new direction based on the concepts of socialism. We would argue that the basic problem today is that we have moved far away from the biblical teachings of God. We have chosen to worship in a different way by making money, sexual immorality, material things, etc. our idols as a replacement for faith and reverence for the Lord.
Our nation today is much like the historic nation of Israel in that its people have several times in biblical history lost their way to God. In those times the people of Israel began to worship idols, often Baal as many others were doing in surrounding nations. The sins of those times even included sacrificing children to the idols along with the complete breakdown in morality, honesty, etc. Have we as a nation also fallen into the trap of idol worship and through abortion the sacrificing of children? Perhaps we can learn from lessons in the past that wwithout a reverence for God the nations of the world have been overrun by their enemies or simply collapsed into anarchy with total loss of law and order and even starvation.
Can we learn from lessons taught to us in the bible about the total destruction of the cities of their nation. Perhaps we need a prophet to lead us back to a nation of people who honor our past and with good will bring us back to a nation of caring, loving ways at all levels of society.
The prophet Zephanian lived during a time when the nation of Israel had fallen into a total loss of their way. They began to worship idols, to sacrifice children to false gods and had descended into the chaos of all forms of immorality. Zephanian pleaded with them to repent and to return to God. Cited below is the powerful message he gave to the people pleading with them to change their ways, to repent. Shortly Thereafter their nation was overrun by its enemies and the people made captive.
Zephanian 2: 1-3 A CALL TO REPENTENCE
Gather yourselves together, yes gather together,
O undesirable nation,
Before the LORD’s fierce anger comes upon you,
Before the day of the LORD’s anger comes upon you!
Seek the LORD, all you meek of the earth,
Who have upheld His justice.
Seek righteousness, seek humility.
It may be you will be hidden
In the day of the LORD’s anger.
